Tromso fjord cruise: four hours on Arctic water, and what is actually out there

Tromsø is at the same latitude as the north coast of Alaska and the middle of Greenland. In both of those places the sea freezes. Here it does not, and the reason is the Norwegian Atlantic Current — the northern end of the system that starts in the Gulf of Mexico — which pushes warm water up this entire coast.

The practical consequences are everywhere. Tromsø is a working port with a fishing fleet and a university, not an outpost. The fjords are navigable in January. And a tourist can book a four-hour boat trip into the Arctic in midwinter the same way they would book one in Norway’s south.

It also shapes the landscape you are looking at. Because the water is relatively warm and the air is cold, the mountains hold snow to the waterline from October to May while the sea stays black and open. That contrast — white rock, black water — is what every photograph from these fjords is actually of.

One more thing follows from it. Because the coast never freezes, the fish are here, and because the fish are here, so is everything that eats them: sea eagles on the headlands, seals, porpoises, and in winter the orca and humpbacks that follow the herring. The fjord cruise is a wildlife trip that does not need to promise wildlife.

The first twenty minutes are the city. The boat leaves the harbour, passes under the Tromsø bridge with the Arctic Cathedral on the mainland side, and clears the island. In December this happens in the dark and the town is a line of orange lights behind you.

Then the mountains start. The city ends abruptly — there is no suburb, no industrial edge — and you are between Kvaløya on one side and the mainland on the other, with peaks going up to a thousand metres straight out of the water.

Somewhere in the first hour there will be eagles. White-tailed sea eagles are resident here: a two-and-a-half-metre wingspan, and they sit on the same headlands often enough that crews know where to slow down. It is the sighting nobody books for and everybody photographs.

The middle of the trip is what you paid for. On the top pick you go ashore at the fish racks. On the fishing cruise the lines go over the side. On the historic boat the guide tells you what this fjord was for before it was scenery. This is where the sailings genuinely differ.

The run home is the best light. In winter it is often the aurora hour; in summer it is the low gold that lasts all evening. Either way, Tromsø appears ahead as a bright line under black mountains, and it is the picture people remember.
